About the book
We, the authors, have respectively taught for more than 30 years in the senior primary phase and have utilised this method of instruction with great success.
This high level of success is achieved by (a) providing the pupils with the required resource material viz a maths dictionary and (b) by posing questions (in the form of mental challenges) which demand that the two books be utilised in conjunction with one another. This not only brings about constant reinforcement of the required knowledge but also facilitates self-learning. If pupils work in pairs this further provides a platform for co-operational learning.
Whilst we acknowledge the exercises are challenging, the pupils become highly motivated and competitive as questions demand accuracy, comprehension and attention to detail. Each subsequent question is based on the previous answer, hence no margin for error. Clues and hints are given to keep the pupils on track. Calculators are used throughout as such tasks are not designed to test tables and bonds. This is a MUST for extension.
On the other hand the dictionary proves invaluable for the weaker to average achiever. It increases confidence and creates greater independence. Given the dictionary, parents too, are able to assist with maths homework.
The dictionary retails at R100 and the Mental Challenge exercises at R 50
We now also offer Dawsan's Maths Dictionary Orientation Exercises to familiarise learners with the dictionary. These retail at R 40 per book.
Should you wish that we visit your school and elaborate on or demonstrate this material, please contact us and we will make the necessary arrangements.
